The Art Of Flow

How Water Inspires My Abstract Process
In my studio, the concept of 'flow' is far more than a technical term; it’s actually the heartbeat of my abstract art process.
When I began the Because We Are Water collection, I wasn't interested in simply painting a blue seascape or a literal shoreline. Instead, I wanted to explore the elemental energy of fluidity, transparency, and the profound emotional connection we have to water’s ever-changing nature.
As a contemporary abstract artist, I find that water serves as the perfect metaphor for the human experience: sometimes still and reflective, other times powerful and surging with unseen currents.
In this post, I’m pulling back the curtain on my intuitive painting techniques and sharing how these original mixed media artworks transition from a surge of inspiration into a finished, soulful focal point for your home.
Obviously people find their own story from the works but they all contain similarities. If you look closely at the works: there is colour, weight, movement, transparency and shadows. This is contemporary abstract elemental art designed to create or convey a mood.
The Inspiration: Rainy Reflections
‘Rainy Reflections’ is my most-ordered print. Through intuitive fluid abstract painting; the application of modelling paste, collage, sprays and so much more I’ve created a peaceful piece of art where people see what they want. They describe the outlines of buildings; puddles at the forefront of the image and a feeling of calmness. It’s art to chill to; to contemplate and to relax by.
Whatever they see, I wanted people to be able to sit in front of the picture and just relax. To get lost in the strokes and to find their own story.
The Intuitive Layers Of A Fluid Abstract Painting.
How is it all achieved?
My mixed media art always begins with a wash of colour to ‘kill’ the white on the canvas. Then a variety of tools to drag and layer paint (drying inbetween of course!)
This creates a ‘lattice’ effect, then I have to decide whether I want the emphasis to be vertical or horizontal.
Then it’s time for detail. A scraping of gold leaf maybe. A touch of collage. Some splashes of paint. It has to feel balanced but loose; it has to have direction, rhythm, and a focal point.
It’s always a challenge to recognise when things are done. But you always know when they are not quite right! Sometimes this can take days. Here are some examples of intuitive, fluid abstract art (rom various collections) that I was working on during 2025.

Bringing the Flow Home
So why does a collector need this energy in their home? To me, the collection is the epitome of modern home décor. It’s mindful interior design, all about creating a restful focal point or a space for introspection, which is much needed in today’s world. We all need a place to rest.
So why not explore the fluid energy of the Because We Are Water Collection and find the original piece or fine art print that resonates with your own flow.
